First-Time Registration
In the interests of public protection all pharmacists who wish to practise in Ireland must be registered in the Register of pharmacists kept by the PSI.
National Route
This includes pharmacists who have successfully completed their education and training in Ireland, including the National Pharmacy Internship Programme.
Information for Pharmacy Interns regarding the National Registration process following the Professional Registration Examination in May 2013: The application to register as a pharmacist is a separate process to be undertaken by all interns who successfully complete all components of the National Pharmacy Internship Programme, including the Professional Registration Examination. The Registration & Qualification Recognition Unit of the PSI is responsible for the processing of all applications to register. The PSI endeavours to process all applications to register in a timely, efficient and transparent manner.
The earliest applicable date for those applicants who have completed the National Pharmacy Internship Programme and have been successful in the May 2013 sitting of the PRE, to have their names entered into the Register of Pharmacists held by the PSI is Friday, 28 June 2013.
For applicants who wish to be registered on Friday, 28 June 2013, the latest date for submission of their application papers will be Monday, 17 June 2013. You may wish to refer to Schedule 1 of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Registration) Rules 2008 with regard to the registration formalities to be completed by applicants when making an application to register. Persons who successfully complete the National Pharmacy Internship Programme, and have been awarded their MPharm Certificate, may make an application to register as a Pharmacist with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland in accordance with Section 14 of the Pharmacy Act 2007 as amended. Applicants may wish to refer to Schedule 1 of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Registration) Rules 2008 with regard to registration formalities to be completed when making an application to register.

For applicants who wish to be registered in the Register of Pharmacists on Sunday 01 December 2013, the latest date for submission of their complete and correct application papers will be Friday 22 November 2013. Persons who submit complete and correct application papers after 22 November 2013 will not be registered until Wednesday 01 January 2014.

European Route
Pharmacists are entitled under European Union (EU) free movement directives to register in Ireland if:
- They hold a qualification from an EU or European Economic Area (EEA) member state, and
- They are nationals of a member state of the EU or EEA

Third Country Route
The application to register as a pharmacist is a separate procedure to be undertaken by all individuals who have successfully completed all stages of the Recognition of Third Country Pharmacist Qualification as a Qualification Appropriate for Practice in Ireland process. The Registration & Qualification Recognition Unit of the PSI is responsible for the processing of all applications to register and endeavours to process all applications to register in a timely, efficient and transparent manner. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all criteria for registration are met as required, and detailed in the Third Country Route of Registration application forms. Incomplete and/or incorrect completed applications will be returned to the applicant. Applicants may be invited to attend a meeting with designated PSI staff to complete application process.

Language Requirements for Registration
For the purposes of satisfying in the case of an applicant who is not a national of a relevant state, that the holder has attained a standard of competence in the English, or Irish language, sufficient to enable him or her to safely communicate with, and to treat, patients and to generally discharge his or her professional obligations as a pharmacist in the State the Council has approved the following standards.
