Guidance Folder for all Pharmacies in Ireland to Support Best Practice

July 21, 2015

Minister Kathleen Lynch with PSI President Ann Frankish and Council member Caroline McGrath at PSI House

Every retail pharmacy business in Ireland has received a folder containing current Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) guidance documents to support safe pharmacy operations and good practice. The President of the PSI, Dr Ann Frankish and the Chair of the Pharmacy Practice Development Committee, Ms Caroline McGrath presented the Pharmacy Practice Guidance Folder to the Minister of State with special responsibility for Primary Care, Social Care (Disabilities & Older People) and Mental Health, Kathleen Lynch TD.

Registrar of the PSI, the pharmacy regulator, Marita Kinsella, said the new folder would make it easier for pharmacists to remain up-to-date with the legislative requirements associated with safe practice. “The intention of this folder is to make the guidance documents the PSI produces, as part of our statutory responsibilities, as simple to access and understand as possible. All the documents included in this folder have been previously published on the PSI website, but with many of these documents produced over several years, much of this information has been reformatted in the new folder to help pharmacists fully understand the requirements relating to pharmacy practice.”

“Going forward the PSI will continue to produce guidance to facilitate compliance with the Regulation of Retail Pharmacy Businesses Regulations 2008 and the safe and effective practice of pharmacy in Ireland. As new guidance is published, in addition to placing in our newsletter and on our website, it is intended to send a copy of this guidance to every registered retail pharmacy so it can be added to this folder. In this way, each pharmacy will have a suite of up-to-date documents on the premises that can be referred to at any time, by both pharmacists and other pharmacy staff members,” Kinsella said.

The new folder includes Guidelines for Retail Pharmacy Businesses, Guidance on Pharmacy Services, Guidance on the Safe Supply of Medicines, Guidance for Pharmacists as well as other useful information relating to pharmacy practice. Self-assessment checklists are also included, where appropriate, in order to assist in assessing compliance with the guidance and in drawing up policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for pharmacies across Ireland.

Electronic versions of the guidance contained in the folder are also available to view and download from the PSI website.
