COVID-19 Emergency Restoration Process

As the COVID-19 situation evolves, the PSI is aware of the many challenges being faced by pharmacists and pharmacy teams, and the essential role that pharmacy plays as a key frontline service ensuring the availability of medicines and continuity of patient care.

The Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (Covid-19) Act 2020 introduces responsive emergency provisions, including a mechanism to quickly restore health professionals to Statutory Registers where a previously registered individual wishes to assist and be available to work within the health system.

In line with these measures, a new restoration route has been introduced to the Pharmacy Act, referred to as a Section 77 registration. This enables former PSI registrants, including pharmacists and pharmaceutical assistants, who either voluntarily withdrew from the register or were removed due to non-payment of registration fees, to have their registration restored.

Restorations to the Register under Section 77 are temporary registrations. Your registration will automatically cease after the COVID-19 public health emergency has passed. The legislation currently provides the end date for temporary registration as 30 June 2022. While you are registered under Section 77 of the Act, you are not precluded from applying under any of the other Sections of the Act if you wish to remain on the Register after the expiration date of the Section 77 provisions.

To make an application under Covid-19 Section 77 Restoration, please download and complete the relevant application form below and submit it by email to section77@psi.ie. Please do not send the application by post. There is no fee for Section 77 applications.

Overview of application process

  • Previous registrants can make an electronic application for Section 77 registration to re-join the Register by downloading the required application form.
  • Applicant submits the completed application form by email to section77@psi.ie
  • We will consider your application and, if satisfied that restoration is appropriate, your name will be restored to the Register of Pharmacists and Pharmaceutical Assistants .
  • Applicants who are restored to the Register will have “Section 77 Registration” stated after their surname on the PSI register.
  • An email will be issued to the applicant to confirm their application has been successful and that their name is restored to the Register.
  • Should a pharmacist wish to retain registration and continue to practise beyond 30 June 2022, they must make application to do so under the relevant provisions.
