FIP World Congress, Dublin 2013

The annual Congress of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) was held in Dublin from 31st August to 5th September 2013. The global event for pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists was co-hosted by the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) in conjunction with FIP.

The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) is the global federation of national associations of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists. It sets global pharmacy standards through professional and scientific guidelines and policy statements, and works in collaboration with international organisations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and other United Nations agencies.

The PSI, as a member organisation of FIP, was delighted to bring the prestigious congress to Dublin and to welcome its many international delegates. The annual FIP Congress is one of the largest international gatherings of practicing pharmacists, academics, industry leaders and scientists in pharmacy, and in 2013 was among the top five business tourism events held in Ireland. Congress attendees numbered 3,000, travelling to Dublin from over 100 countries.

Along with a busy scientific/meeting programme at the Convention Centre Dublin, there was also a large exhibition with a central 'Pharmacy in Ireland' meeting place for delegates, and several social and sporting events through the week to offer a taste of Dublin and Ireland. Local pharmacists were on hand to meet visiting colleagues, with great opportunities for casual exchanges of information and learning.  A local host committee, comprised of representatives from pharmacy organisations in Ireland and Northern Ireland, worked alongside the PSI in the promotion and planning of the 2013 FIP Congress.

The next host city is Bangkok in September 2014 and by 2015 the FIP Congress will be back in Europe. The Congress was last held by the PSI in Dublin in 1975
