Niall Byrne, Registrar and Chief Officer of the PSI, will step down from his role at the end of December

Niall Byrne, Registrar and Chief Officer of PSI-the pharmacy regulator is to step down from his role at the end of December to take up a chief executive position with another public body. An interim Registrar is being appointed while the recruitment of Mr Byrne’s replacement takes place.

Speaking on behalf of the Council of the PSI, President Muireann Ní Shúilleabháin said, “We are immensely grateful to Niall for his exemplary leadership of the PSI over the past five years. His extensive experience in regulation and organisation development have proven hugely beneficial at a time of significant change and challenge for pharmacy services and the wider healthcare system. Through his guidance on the PSI’s strategic direction and commitment to strong relations with key stakeholders, he has made a significant contribution to the development of the PSI and its important work in ensuring the delivery of safe, quality pharmacy services to the public and the maintenance of the pharmacy profession’s reputation as trusted healthcare providers. We wish him every success in his new role.”

Mr Byrne stated: “I would like to thank the members of the PSI Council, including current President, Muireann Ní Shúilleabháin, and recent past Presidents, as well as my PSI colleagues for their support to me in my role and for their dedication and commitment to the public interest remit of PSI. I would also like to acknowledge and thank the many pharmacists whom I have come to know during my time as Registrar, and to say that I am proud of my association with the profession. The pharmacy profession’s valuable reputation as trusted healthcare providers has always been important to the public, and especially so during this pandemic.”

The PSI President was also pleased to announce that Dr Lorraine Horgan will fill the role of Interim Registrar pending completion of a public recruitment process to appoint a new Registrar, and said she looked forward to working with her in the months ahead. Currently Head of Corporate Services with PSI, Dr Horgan has been with the pharmacy regulator since 2006, where she has held a variety of roles, including Head of Professional Development and Learning.
