PSI and Medical Council Working Group to Jointly Consider Patient Safety Matters

February 16, 2016

A working group with relevant members of the Medical Council and the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland has been established to examine patient safety matters of mutual concern and particularly focusing on safe prescribing and dispensing. The aim of this is to make sure that pharmacists, doctors and members of the public receive clear information on agreed best practice for both professions. This positive initiative aims to explore how the two regulators can work together to support the existing collaborative practice between medical doctors and pharmacists, in the shared care of patients in the broader multidisciplinary team.

Some of the areas being examined relate to the prescribing and dispensing of controlled drugs and the care of patients in particular care settings. This work will be progressed on a phased basis throughout 2016, and both professions will continue to be updated.
