Pharmacy Act 2007

The Pharmacy Act 2007 established the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) as the statutory regulator of pharmacy in Ireland. The Act sets out all the main areas of responsibility of the PSI and what we must do on the public’s behalf as the pharmacy regulator.

The Act has brought many significant changes to the regulation of pharmacy in Ireland;

  • For the first time, a non-pharmacist majority Council.
  • A formal complaints and fitness to practise system.
  • New powers of inspection and investigation for the PSI.
  • Formal registration and regulation of retail pharmacy businesses.
  • A new registration system for pharmacists.
  • A statutory Code of Conduct and mandatory continuing professional development for pharmacists.
